I own "River of Gold" which has a lot going for it as a game. It also has a beautiful gold inlayed board. But after that the components start to fade.
I've already mentioned replacing the several boards worth of money with metal coin tokens.

I've also epoxy-resined the many goods tokens.
Though I appreciate the wooden boat tokens, they are a bit underwhelming - small and abstract.
So I looked around and found plastic boat tokens - officially for Tsuro of the Seas. These were perfect size, but definitely needed a bit of an paint-job.

I have mentioned before that I am no painter, and am wary of that rabbithole. Luckily someone (I don't know who sorry) posted a picture here: https://rulesofplay.co.uk/products/tsuro-of-the-seas . I reckoned I was capable of that - not too much effort - so I gave it a go. And...not too bad! Overall just a couple of hours work - a couple of coats and then some "detail" which even if poorly executed still looks good on these quite small 1 inch figurines.

The trick is a very light gold brushing of the sides that really brings out the relief.
My daughter says I should invest in proper miniatures paint and brushes, but I'm still not keen.
Addendum: I just found these upgrades for the goods tokens.
Tempting...
